Welcome Message - Over-all Chair - PHA 48th Annual Convention
Greetings colleagues and friends!
It is generally believed that part of the consequences of a growing economy is the increase in the incidence of non-communicable diseases and the Philippines with all its signs of economic growth, is no exception. The last 2 decades have shown the dramatic increase of NCDs, particularly cardiovascular diseases as the topmost killers among Filipino patients and this is a worldwide trend.
Over the past years, the Philippine Heart Association has been committed to further improve the standard of care for the Filipino cardiac patients by establishing registries and researches that provide much needed knowledge in order to determine cardiovascular disease and risk factor prevalence among members of our population. Likewise, with its vision to be at the global forefront, the PHA has forged partnerships with its regional and international counterparts and the other local societies in order to continuously improve the standard of cardiovascular care.
With this in mind and after months of brainstorming and preparations, we are proud to bring you the 48th PHA Annual Convention & Scientific Meeting with this year’s theme, “Linkages & Collaborations: Convergence towards comprehensive cardiovascular care.” This convention aims to bring you a series of lectures and interactive sessions that will primarily focus on a team approach on how to address the diverse problems and co-morbidities that may beset our cardiac patients. The sessions, which will feature both local and international experts, will tackle theoretical discussions and dissect actual case scenarios.
A welcome addition for this year’s scientific meeting are the “Snippets in Cardiology” wherein which some of our Learning Resource Centers will feature mini-lectures where you will get a chance to get a closer and one-on-one interaction with some of our local & international experts. We trust that at the end of this scientific meeting, the participants would have gained vital information that will add to your confidence in managing cardiac patients whether you are a cardiologist or not.
We also have some social activities where our members could catch up with friends, reminisce on good times together and create new memories. We cordially invite you to our closing ceremonies and subsequently, the fellowship night for a night of fun & camaraderie.
Let me take the opportunity to thank all the members of the scientific committee and the PHA councils who have worked hard to come up with an excellent program. My gratitude also goes to the rest of the convention team: the PHA board of directors, secretariat, the research, website, information & technology, and publications committees, PHA chapters, affiliate societies, the cardiology training institutions, cardio-fellows in training, and our pharmaceutical and industry friends who have all contributed tremendously to this convention.
Lastly, we are very grateful to all our speakers and colleagues from the different local societies, the ASEAN cardiology societies, the Asia-Pacific Society of Cardiology, members of the European Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology for generously sharing their time and expertise.
Looking forward to a productive week of learning for everyone.
